THE TRUTH ABOUT LEADERSHIP
TRUTH # 4
FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE SETS LEADERS APART
Focus on the exciting possibilities of the future.
“Dennis Madsen grew up throughout the Northeast and Midwest United States, but after getting his Masters In Architecture from Georgia Tech (Go Jackets!), he settled in Atlanta for almost 20 years. While there, he worked for Urban Collage, a small, premier planning and urban design firm. His experience in the private sector exposed him to projects ranging in scale from single-tract redevelopments to city-wide comprehensive plans, and allowed him to interact with clients from the public sector to private developers, from civic organizations to the general public, and all sorts of entities in between.
Dennis and his family – wife Laura Lester and son Adlai – relocated here in January of 2013, in part so Laura could return to her hometown, but in large part because the Mayor of Huntsville had laid out a vision for smart growth and engaged planning and advertised a once-in-a-lifetime position to promote this vision in Huntsville. Attracted by the quality of life here, and the opportunity to be a part of growing community, Dennis applied for – and was ultimately offered – the position of Manager of Urban and Long-Range Planning for the City of Huntsville. Since then, Dennis and his group have been directing “The BIG Picture – a community-based comprehensive planning effort for the future of Huntsville.”
