Adversity is nothing new for combat veteran, Colonel Debra M. Lewis, a pioneering woman in the Army. Deb was a member of the 1980 West Point graduating class; the first class that Included women. This wife, mother of one, and stepmother of two, retired from active duty in 2010. During her 34 years of military service Lewis was an inspector general, a commander in Iraq, and was inside the Pentagon during that unfortunate day of the 9/11 attack. Deb commanded three US Army Corps of Engineers Districts and multi-billion dollar construction projects, and has also earned a Harvard MBA.
“Women have come a long way and we have every reason to be proud. When we arrived to West Point we faced low-to-no expectations on our ability to do anything.” She and her sisters-in-arms faced open hostility and challenges as the first females at the Academy. “But look at us now: we have women who’ve graduated Ranger School, women in top-level positions, and we’ve proved we can deal with adversity.”
Even the most positive people have moments when they struggle against negative influences. After a lifetime of transforming adversity to something better, Deb offers helpful tools, insights and stories to find your best self, and be more productive, engaged and confident. Deb’s positive outlook on life and diverse accomplishments are grounded in a clear understanding of what it takes to transform adversity into personal and professional opportunities for enduring success.
